چکیده

In resting Acetobacter suboxydans cells, glycerol can be oxidized beyond the dihydroxyacetone stage, and sorbitol, beyond the sorbose stage (King and Cheldelin, 1952a). 2 ,4-Dinitrophenol inhibits the further oxidation of dihydroxyacetone or sorbose but has no effect upon the first step oxidations (King and Cheldelin, 1952b). Since these keto derivatives can be metabolized further by resting cells, their potentialities as energy sources for growth were studied. The facts described herein suggest that the growth of the organism depends only upon the energy from the first step oxidations. 2,4Dinitrophenol at concentrations completely inhibitory to the oxidation of dihydroxyacetone or sorbose did not exert any effect on growth.

Phosphorylative and non-phosphorylative oxidation in Acetobacter suboxydans.

It has been shown that glycerol can be oxidized beyond the dihydroxyacetone (DHA) stage by resting Acetobacter suboxydans cells (1). Through washing and centrifuging of the cells at room temperature, most of the oxidative activity was destroyed, which, however, could be restored by the addition of inorganic phosphate and diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN). 2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP), a phosphate “...

The biological oxidation of sorbitol.

Sorbitol is fermented in good yields to sorbose by some of the members of the Acetobacter species (1, 2). Resting cells of Acetobacter suboxydans may, in the absence of a source of nitrogen, oxidize sorbitol with the consumption of over 4 atoms of oxygen per molecule of substrate (3, 4). From a study of dinitrophenol action on this organism, the first step in sorbitol oxidation was shown to be ...

OXIDATIONS BY ACETOBACTER SUBOXYDANS Sirs: Acetobacter suboxydans is known to bring about oxidation of polyhydroxy

Acetobacter suboxydans is known to bring about oxidation of polyhydroxy compounds. The action of the bacterial enzyme is limited, however, to substances with specific configurations. According to the generalization of Bertrand,’ only those hydroxyl groups are oxidized which are situated between a primary hydroxyl group and a secondary one in a cis position. Hann, Tilden, and Hudson,2 in a compa...
